Grain Leather

Outermost layer of Hide is Grain leather. Which is the most commonly used leather within the glove industry due to its plentiful availability. The United States and Austrailia produce the majority of these hides. The advantages include comfort, durability, excellent abrasion and breathability. Chrome tanning of this leather provides greater wear and heat resistance. Due to its Special characteristics, grain leather is more expensive than split leather.

Nubeck Leather

The grain leather side can also be brushed to a velvety finish in order to blend away cosmetic defects. Also known as “nubuck”, brushed grain should not be confused with “suede”,which is derived from split leather.

Grain Leather Reverse Side

The external side of the hide is turned inside out so that it rests against your hand to improve feel and dexterity.  The scruffy side of the grain leather faces out.

Split Leather and Its Types

Once the top GRAIN layer has been removed, the remaining layer is split into one or more split leather layers. Split leather is generally not as strong as the grain layer; however, it has a some advantages:

  • Because of its dense fibers, split leather is more abrasion resistance
  • Split leather is more water resistant that grain leather
  • Split leather has some natural puncture resistance

Cowhide is thick enough to yield several layers of split leather, while other hides, such as goatskin, sheep and Deer Skin are too thin. That’s Why Split Leather is not possible.

Types of Split Leather

• Side split leather comes from the rib area of the animal. This part of the leather is the most durable and provides the greatest protection because of its greater density of fibers.

• Shoulder split leather is more economical than side, but less durable. The additional movement of the animal in this shoulder area creates less fibers and a more visible texture difference.

• Belly split leather is the most economical; however, it has the least consistency of texture and appearance
